Umaa Group of institutions was established in 1988 in Marondera with its core principle centered on training and developing the community as a means of empowerment. The Institution began as a training facility for Martial arts, Secretarial studies, Dressmaking, and Driving school. The Campus quickly evolved and was known as Umaa Institute for International Courses as it began to offer international qualifications in Business Studies, Marketing, Bookkeeping, Journalism, Travel & Tourism, Hotel & catering, and Motor mechanics. By 1991 Umaa had grown significantly and began to offer academic qualifications under Cambridge University which led to the establishment of the campus now known as Umaa Institute Zimbabwe. In the year 2002, Umaa began training students in Agriculture which led to the establishment of Umaa Institute of Agriculture in 2004 as a growing need arose to empower and train personnel for national food security. In the same year, Umaa Institute Harare was established in Msasa as a response to the growing demand in the Harare market. In 2008 Umaa Elite College opened its doors for the first time and was located in the Avenues area of Harare but later closed in 2021 due to the effects brought about by COVID-19. In the year 2019, Umaa Mission College was established as a means of government efforts in accommodating students from St Charles Lwanga Secondary that was affected by Cyclone Idai.
